Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

A deeply involving and interesting movie about the covert war between Afghanistan and the Russians during a time when the "cold war" still existed. For those who might not have been alive at the time (the movie's period starts in 1980 and runs through 1993), or even for those like me who were young and just annoyed at listening to their parents chatter on about politics, you'd better pay close attention or the fast pace of the movie will have you scratching your head as to what's going on.
I find that amusing since the majority of the people who ended up involved in Wilson's War must have felt the same way. They were approving budget increases for a war that they didn't understand to help several groups of people whom they didn't respect. While the ultimate goal, much like Julia Roberts' character points out is the opportunity to deliver religious freedom to several sects of people who were being oppressed by the Russians, is a noble one indeed, the disrespect that the Americans helping them remained.
And it plays a large factor in what's going on in the world today with our current war. If we hadn't f*cked up the end game and just continued to support the countries who didn't share our puritanical Xtian ways of life, if we'd given just a mere fraction of the money that we'd given for weapons towards schools and hospitals, we might never have seen the disrespect we showed them returned to our own shores. Something to chew on.
Political issues aside, this is a strong ensemble piece which features many prominent faces and good performances without having to endure any of them for an overexposed amount of time. Another plus on its side. Plus, with the fast pace of the film and the exceeding welcome 1 hour and 40 minute (approx) running time, the movie tells its story without wearing out its welcome. Rare in the day and age of war movies.
